Prime Power
When the very lives of people in remote northern Canadian villages depend on an electrical power source, the question of equipment reliability takes on a dramatic new meaning. That is why northern power generation stations are commonly Caterpillar, and often-as-not, are packaged by Finning Power Systems.
Harsh weather conditions and the environmental sensitivities of Canada’s North, combined with lack of on-site maintenance personnel in many isolated communities, have given our people a unique perspective on the resourcefulness and adaptability required to build and service remote site installations.
Finning Power Systems works closely with each customer to identify the challenges of their particular situation. We then develop a unique solution to meet these challenges. As part of a prime power installation at a Diamond mine in Canada’s far north, for example, Finning designed and fabricated a modular heat recovery system that distributes engine heat to the processing and building heating functions. Installed on five Cat 3616 Generator Sets rated at 4.4 MW each, the system not only helped solve a heating problem but also reduced overall operating costs for the mine.
In Phnom Penh, we designed and commissioned a modular, 16 MW power station, load management system, controls and 22 kV switch gear. This installation now sets the standard for power quality in the city.

Generation Systems
Finning Generation Systems specializes in combined heat and power installations and distributed generation. We also provide energy management services that assist power producers and commercial consumers to effectively manage energy supply and demand.
Distributed generation on a customer’s site, or at a substation, can be an economical means of utilizing capital investment to provide competitive retail power services.
Peak Shaving is an effective, cooperative arrangement where customers utilize their standby installation to reduce power costs during peak load times with the option of supplying power for profit to the utility grid at other times. Owners benefit by enjoying uninterrupted power, immediate energy cost savings, fast payback on their power system, plus the added assurance of emergency standby service. Utility owners can take advantage of sub station installations thereby delaying construction and maintenance costs, making more efficient use of generation and transmission systems, and predictably reducing peak demand.
Finning Generation Systems has a range of ownership and operating options that will assist owners of generator sets to take advantage of the savings in overall energy costs provided by self-generating.
We are also one of the few Caterpillar dealers in North America authorized to sell the Caterpillar CM large bore engine product line. These engines range from 1020 kW to 15,710 kW and give Finning Power Systems the power to deliver major turnkey power installations either on a direct basis, or in a joint venture arrangement that will ensure proper product support anywhere on the globe.
