Oil Sampling Procedure
To ensure the sample is representative:
- Always sample well-mixed oil after running at least 15 minutes.
- Always sample oil at normal operating temperatures.
- DO NOT allow external dirt to enter sample.
- When changing oil always drain when hot.
METHOD "A"
When changing oil:
- DO NOT take sample as oil starts to drain.
- DO NOT take sample as oil finishes draining.
- Take sample directly into sample bottle after oil has been running for a short period.
- DO NOT take sample from oil collected in another container.
METHOD "B"
With suction pump:
- Install the used sample bottle on the suction pump.
- Insert pump hose into dipstick tube to same depth as dipstick.
- Operate pump till bottle is 3/4 full (discard this sample).
- Install clean sample bottle on pump and fill to 3/4 full (Forward this sample to lab)
- To avoid contaminating the pump do not operate it on its side or
overfill sample bottles.
- Install the original used pump bottle and flush the pump hose several times with fuel
from the fuel tank.
- BE SURE fuel is completely drained form the pump hose.
METHOD "C"
With oil pressure line sampling valve:
- A suitable drain valve can be connected to a "T" in an oil pressure line. The
discharge side of the valve should be fitted with a pipe plug or cap.
- Before taking an oil sample a pint of oil should be run off in order to eliminate any
residual contamination in the oil lines.
